Saira outraises her opponent without corporate PACs

Incumbent and Chief Deputy Whip Rep. Diana DeGette was outraised by progressive newcomer, Democrat Saira Rao

Denver, CO, April 16, 2018 – Less than 100 days ago, Saira Rao announced her candidacy for Colorado’s 1st Congressional District. She is challenging incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette for the seat. Since then, she’s met with hundreds of people, hosted and attended dozens of events, and raised over $250,000 from individual donors in her 1st Quarter, outraising DeGette’s numbers.

Saira will be placed on the ballot for the Democratic party’s primary election, a nomination she earned by petitioning on the ballot and participating in the party’s assembly process. Rao has shown she has the right message and fire to unseat DeGette in the June 26th primary.

The establishment in Denver is taking notice of Rao’s success thus far, as has her opponent, Rep. DeGette. In two emails sent over the weekend to her supporters, DeGette stated, “I have good news and bad news. First, the good news: I am officially on the ballot for the Democratic primary in June. The bad news: my opponent outraised me last quarter. I urgently need support to fuel our grassroots field effort.”

Colorado’s first Congressional district, which encompasses Denver and parts of Jefferson and Arapahoe counties, has grown dramatically in the last few years. Said Rao, “Primaries define the future. We, the Democratic party, already know what we’re against, but what are the values we won’t compromise on? What we are for?”

“Our road to Washington has just begun and I promise to fight FOR the values and issues you care about. Our grassroots campaign is funded by the people and FOR the people. I will not take a penny from corporations. This campaign is about social, racial, and economic equity for all. We need a clean Dream Act now; Dreamers are human beings, not soundbites. We need single-payer healthcare and affordable prescription drugs, which means standing up to Big Pharma. The elimination of crushing student loan debt is one of my top priorities.”

DeGette has accepted corporate PAC money since she was first elected to Congress in 1997. As of January 2017, she has accepted $303,700 from “other committees”, many of which are corporate PACs. Rao is running on a progressive agenda where she believes everyone deserves a seat at the table. Among other things, she has not taken a single donation from corporate PACs. Change is coming to Washington and her name is Saira Rao.

Rao has rejected corporate PAC money in favor of individual donations

Denver, CO, April 2, 2018 — Democrat Saira Rao (www.SairaForCongress.com), who is running to represent Colorado’s first Congressional district, will file her first quarterly report showing over $250,000 raised from individual donors.

Rao, who launched her campaign in January, said, “This campaign is about bringing people together. I’m proud of the coalition we’re building of Democrats and independents who want a more representative government.

“If Democrats are going to take back Congress, we need to build a party that answers to everyday people, not corporations. We can’t fight Trump’s anti-worker agenda if the same donors are funding both parties.”

Rao has also pledged to not take corporate PAC money. In February, she made headlines when she cleared the 500-donor mark within 28 days of her launch. Today, her campaign boasts the support of over 950 individual donors.

Notable Democratic leaders who have also taken the No Corporate PAC pledge include Senators Kristen Gillibrand, Bernie Sanders, Cory Booker,  Elizabeth Warren, and Maria Cantwell, Representatives Ro Khanna and Jared Polis, Paul Ryan challenger Randy Bryce, and Ted Cruz challenger Representative Beto O’Rourke.

Rao’s progressive platform includes controlling prescription drug costs, eliminating student loan debt, and passing a single-payer healthcare bill.

The Democratic primary is June 26th, 2018. For the first time, Colorado’s unaffiliated voters will be able to participate. If elected, Rao will be the first woman of color from Colorado to go to Congress and one of the few Asian-Americans to ever hold office in the state.

SAIRA RAO’S CONGRESSIONAL CAMPAIGN TURNS IN MORE THAN 1,700 PETITION SIGNATURES TO COLORADO SECRETARY OF STATE’S OFFICE

Rao’s campaign gained the support of several hundred unaffiliated voters during drive

Denver, CO, March 5th, 2018 — Democrat Saira Rao (www.SairaForCongress.com) announced today that her campaign turned in their petition for ballot access in Colorado’s First Congressional District, having collected more than 1,700 signatures from registered Democrats.

Field and Outreach Director Jordan Bresson, who left her four-year organizing job at Conservation Colorado to join the campaign, said, “So many unaffiliated voters wanted to sign our petition. Only registered Democrats are allowed to sign, but it’s safe to say we met more than a few hundred independents who are voting for Saira in June.”

The campaign was meticulous about quality-controlling the petition process, crossing off voters that appeared to be registered as non-partisan or had moved but failed to update their voter registration.

“I didn’t even let my team count messy handwriting in our nightly reports,” Bresson added. “We’re not taking our chances.”

Said Rao, “This campaign is about giving everyone a seat at the table and making Colorado a progressive leader in national politics. I’m so grateful to everyone who helped make this happen, and I look forward to a robust primary and healthy debates on healthcare, criminal justice reform, and getting corporate money out of the Democratic Party.”

“We’re keeping in touch with every person we interacted with during the petition drive,” said JoyAnn Ruscha, Rao’s campaign manager. “We feel awesome about the positive feedback we got in the field and we’re excited about participating in Colorado’s first open primary.”

Colorado’s primary is on June 26th, 2018. Unaffiliated voters will be eligible to participate in the Democratic primary for the first time.

To date, Saira Rao has earned the support of over 750 individual donors.

State Representative Joe Salazar endorses Saira Rao for Congress

State Representative Joe Salazar endorses Saira Rao for Congress

Statement of Endorsement of Saira Rao for Congress

State Representative Joseph Salazar

Over the course of months and years, I have had the privilege/pain of seeing democratic electoral politics from behind the scenes.  I’ve seen the kingmakers and gatekeepers hold our party back from reaching the progressive values we find in our own party platform. Now we are seeing the massive pushback from progressive candidates who are tired of status quo politics.

The status quo.

Rep. Joe Salazar rules out run for governor for a shot at attorney general

You know the status quo doesn’t work for many of us, right? People of color, women of color, white women, the disabled, LGBTQ family, Muslim community members, Labor etc.  And we’ve seen status quo politics and politicians in our party for far too long. These same people make the excuse that because they are in the minority, they can’t get anything done in Congress.

Being in the minority?! Welcome to our freaking world!  But, do you know what we do differently? We battle it out every day.  Every. Single. Day. We don’t have a choice. We fight for every advancement we make – holding a very fragile line for our communities and our children.

Like you, I am tired of status quo politics and status quo politicians.  I want to see someone who understands the world in a different way. Someone who knows the battles from a non-privileged perspective.

When Saira Rao sat down with me a few weeks back, I was excited that a woman of color was running for CD 1.  But, it’s not just her knowledge on issues that impressed me. It was her ability to speak in a language that connects so many of us from disadvantaged communities.  Language about communities of color; growing up surrounded by racism; overcoming stereotypes; fighting for success; maintaining success; and the frustration with elected officials who see our diverse communities as a monolith or view our issues as toxic.

Saira didn’t just complain, though!  She had action behind her words. Her willingness to go to Congress, with all the odds stacked against her, and fight for us because… well… Saira knows that struggle happens whether or not you’re in power. What I saw and heard from Saira is what I want in every single congressperson.

Let’s face it.  All the frustration we feel about our government just isn’t about Donald Trump.  It’s also about a Congress that does very little for us. It’s about those politician who feel quite comfortable in safe seats. The marching, protesting, rallying also is about those individuals who can do so much more, but don’t or won’t.

The status quo is about comfort and privilege.

And because Saira knows that many of Denver’s communities neither have comfort nor privilege, because she is a wicked smart street fighter who has the guts and vision to shake things up and to better the lives of all people in CD 1, I am thrilled to endorse her candidacy for Congressional District 1!
