Saira Rao, a Denver Democrat, said Friday her campaign received contributions from more than 500 individual donors within a month of launching her primary challenge against U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette, who is serving her 11th term representing Colorado’s 1st Congressional District.

“We are not taking any corporate PAC money,” Rao said in a statement. “Special interests are robbing people of their voices, and I am not going to play that game. We’re doing this the hard way — dollar by dollar, door by door.”

Democrat challenger in CD-1 beat out all other Colorado Congressional candidates

Denver, CO, February 8, 2018 – Saira Rao (www.SairaForCongress.com) has received over five hundred donations in 30 days for her upstart primary challenge in Colorado’s First Congressional District. All of them came from individuals. None of the other Democratic Congressional candidates in Colorado came close to 500 donors their first month.

Saira, 43, is the co-founder of children’s media company In This Together Media. She filed to run for Congress on January 10th, 2018.

““We are not taking any corporate PAC money,” said Rao. “Special interests are robbing people of their voices and I am not going to play that game. We’re doing this hard way – dollar by dollar, door by door.”

Rao’s opponent. 22-year incumbent Rep. Diana DeGette, has raised $429,860 this cycle, more than half coming from political action committees. DeGette reported $65,984 cash on hand as of January 1, 2018.

The  Democratic primary is June 26th, 2018. For the first time, Colorado’s unaffiliated voters will be able to participate.

“People are excited about Saira,” Rao’s campaign manager, JoyAnn Ruscha, said. “She’s offering voters the chance at Washington representation without taking a dollar from big Pharma, defense contractors, or any other corporation that might not share their values.”

The State of Our Union

The State of Our Union

Last night, the President delivered his first State of the Union — and we called on the Colorado Congressional delegation to boycott it. “We cannot legitimize a man who brags about being a rapist, embraces white supremacy, and pushes policies that harm our most vulnerable citizens,” Saira said in a statement to Colorado Politics. “Why would anyone give him an audience? Colorado’s congressional delegation needs to lead by example and stay home.”

Instead, more than 50 of us gathered at Declaration Brewing to talk about the State of OUR Union — to talk about what’s keeping us up at night, and what we can do to make progress at this critical moment in our democracy.

The conversation ranged from homelessness to dark money, from Medicare-for-All to Dreamers, from student loan debt to affordable housing, all issues we need to address, no matter who is in the White House.

“There are kids in America dying of curable illnesses because of corporate greed, because some jerk in a boardroom puts profit over people’s lives. Shame on anyone who accepts that. What this Party lacks right now is a moral imagination, and I believe we’ve lost our way because we’ve stopped listening the very people who need us the most. “

What’s keeping you up at night right now? And what would you like to see from your representative? Drop us a line and let us know.
